Avais Javid has been volunteering with us for the past couple of years, after being involved in our service as a young person & Youth Forum Member.
His enthusiasm, spirit, support and encouragement led to him winning our Volunteer of the Year Award in 2015. Despite his recent commitment to being a member of the National NHS Youth Forum and also studying nursing at university, Avais continues to volunteer for the Youth Service, inspiring many young people living with health conditions.
This led to Avais being nominated for the Lord Mayor of Nottingham’s Volunteer Awards.
Avais was shortlisted for the award and attended a ceremony on Friday evening at the Council House in Nottingham. We are excited to announce that Avais beat off stiff competition to scoop the award of ‘Young Volunteer of the Year’

Nottingham Children’s Hospital have recently unveiled their new logo and our Youth Forum were there to say:

Young people were on hand to promote ‘Robin’, hand out lanyards to staff and sell charity merchandise.
When asked what ‘Nottingham Children’s Hospital means to you’ some responses from the Youth Forum members was:
“Somewhere where you are cared for and young people’s views are heard and they are treated as individuals and not just a health condition”
“I have developed so much over the past year – I have gained confidence and been able to get back on my feet. The Youth Service is a great part of the Children’s Hospital – we are lucky to have it!”

Fairy Bricks are a charity who donate Lego to Children’s Hospitals around the country. We were lucky to have them visit us on Wednesday 10th February as their 100th donation!
They brought lots of Lego for children on the wards and for our own Lego Group – Beyond the Brick!
They also brought Mark Guest, the editor of Bricks Magazine with them to hear more about their donations and our Lego Group.
One of the ‘Faries’ made a cake to celebrate their 100th donation. Sadly we couldn’t eat it but, with over 3,000 bricks, it certainly looked amazing!

Our last residential of the year was a huge success with our Young Adult Group!
We had a weekend away at Center Parcs where the group could explore independent living, team work, organisational skills, budgeting, motivation and future planning workshops, exercise, as well as enjoying all the festive fun!
Our Young Adult Group is for 16-25 year olds and is held every Friday morning in the Youth Room from 10am – 1pm. We are also hoping to extend the sessions to one Monday evening a month in 2016.

Takeover day is a national project in which young people have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of adult roles. Not only is this a great opportunity for young people to gain an insight into work and possibly different careers, but it also enables orgaisations to gain valuable feedback, from a young person’s perspective.
We started the day meeting Dorothy Bean, clinical lead for the childrens hospital, and interviewing her about her job and thoughts on young people’s health services. Then we had a brief tour around a few departments within the childrens hospital. Whilst we did this we were looking at the artwork in the corridors and discussing ways in which it could be improved. The hospital radio then gave us the opportunity to go and see what they do and to take part in a show to promote the youth service and all the good work it does with young people. After lunch young people had the opportunity to go and shadow staff in their roles within the childrens hospital. Placements included E17, D33, Hospital School, Childrens Outpatients, NUH Charity, Surgical day unit and the youth service.
To finish off the day we will be having a question and answer session with senior management, to hear their views and opinions in relation to health services for young people.
